Okay sooo this piece. This piece is yet another that took me FOREVER (Surprise, being busy makes me work slower! -_-) except, there's more to this piece.

First of all, you can see it's kinda a combination of various styles I've messed around in. That's something I've been wanting to do for a while...Now that I have elements to make up style from, I need to figure out what that style is.

Second of all, it's mega-ultra-symbolic. Not just the obvious (The burning coffin isn't exactly the most subtle memento mori on earth), but also the seemingly innocuous. There is hardly anything on this that I put in for compositional purposes.

And thirdly, APPARENTLY it's not good enough to get into the Celebration of the Humanities at my school. RE. JECT. ED.
I disagree.

Anyways, please enjoy, and please provide feedback in any way you can! Positive, negative, etc., I seek only to make myself better of an artist!

Since you have asked for feedback, I will give you a couple of the most obvios problems I see with this painting. I offer this in the spirit of making you the better artist you seek.
The thumbnail looked a bit more interesting than most of the other stuff I zipped through, so I opened it. Wondering what I was looking at, I read your blob and couldn't see the
so called "mega-ultra-symbolic." But that's probably a sujective thing.
What I would like adress more than a lot of other things, mainly the composition of the piece. Amateur artists quite often make the mistake of dividing the canvas right in half
with the horizion line smack in the midde instead higher or lower. On top of that amateurish mistake you have placed all those black triangles radiating out from the very center of the canvas that only serves to intensify the ereor. And lastly, BTW, in nature there is no black. Commertial art yes, nature, no. Hope this is of some help. Keep painting.

Hey, thanks! :) I really do appreciate feedback, especially the negative...gives me a chance to improve! So mega thanks just for coming forward with this, most people are too afraid to say anything negative.

The symbolism was kinda...Well, now, looking back, it was foolishness. I did make it symbolic, but a large part of that symbolism was personal symbolism, and so, most people won't recognize all that.

As for the composition, you are 100% right. I made the composition early on, and not long after that, I learned the rules of composition...it's still something I have to work on, but it was too late for this particular piece. One thing I didn't realize, though, was the black lines accentuating the issue...you're right about that, and I feel honestly a bit dumb for not realizing it.

As for "In nature, there is no black", I agree, but in this case, I wasn't going for a natural feel. In fact, I wanted to make it look as unnatural as possible. I guess that didn't get across quite as well as I'd liked.

Either way, much thank yous for the comment, it did help! :) Take it easy, and you also keep painting (Or photographing, or whatever you feel like...looks like you do a bit of everything!)
